Common Questions

Why is polythene waste a problem?

Single use plastics and polythene are technically banned in New Jersey, and this stops them from being used for bagging and other goods. However, they still show up in product packaging, something that is harder to regulate. Moreover, many states, including New Jersey, lack a proper recycling system to handle these polythenes. If someone unknowingly places a polythene bag in the recycling bin, the entire batch of recyclables could be thrown in the trash. Polythenes are extremely harmful, they clog waterways, harm wildlife that mistake it for food, and break down into microplastics that end up in our own bodies. The lack of awareness, proper disposal, and recycling infrastructure is exactly what this foundation is striving to fix.

What are polythenes?

Polythenes are different from regular plastics. They are a common item used to make bags and packaging material. Polythenes are favored for its durability and low costs, but unfortunately take hundreds of years to decompose in a landfill. Many people don't realize the different between polythenes and other plastics, but essentially polythenes are extremely thin plastics, which make them very hard to recycle.

What should I do with my polythene waste?

Some grocery stores, retailers, or community centers offer drop off bins specifically designed for polythene dispoal. These are typically sent off to a specialized facility that can handle the recycling of polythene materials. Part of our work and vision here at the Polythin Foundation is to either incorporate polythene recycling alongside the rest of the plastics to make it easier to properly dispose of polythenes, or create more designated drop offs near every community. Whatever you do, DO NOT put polythene waste into your recycling bin, that can cause your entire lot of recyclables to go into the trash, and then into a landfill.

Empowering Change for a Greener Future

At The Poly-Thin Foundation, we strive to eliminate polythene waste through recycling initiatives, community empowerment, and advocacy for sustainable policies, envisioning a cleaner, waste-free world for future generations.
